Memory Box Creates Emotional Release

KEAJUANIS MALENAClinical Psychologist, Touch Of Wholeness
One memorable case involved a client struggling with profound grief following the loss of a parent. Despite multiple sessions, they remained emotionally "stuck," unable to express feelings or find closure. We introduced a symbolic ritual: creating a memory box filled with letters, photographs, and small mementos representing their relationship with their parent. During the session, the client shared memories aloud, expressing love, regret, and gratitude as they placed items into the box. This act externalized their emotions, providing both a tangible connection and a sense of release. What made this intervention effective was its dual nature: it honored the deceased while allowing the client to process and express suppressed emotions safely. In the following weeks, the client reported a noticeable reduction in intrusive thoughts, increased emotional openness, and a newfound ability to cherish memories without being overwhelmed by grief. Symbolic rituals like this demonstrate how integrating tangible, meaningful actions into therapy can catalyze breakthroughs when words alone are insufficient.
