Center Impact and Show Accountability
Repair works best when the impact on the client is front and center. Talking about good intent can sound like a plea for forgiveness and can reopen harm. Naming what was said or done and the likely effect shows accountability.
Curiosity about how it landed invites agency without pressure to teach. Attention to impact also fits the larger context of power, identity, and history. In the next session, name the impact first and ask what would help now.
Pursue Consultation and Structured Study
True repair continues between sessions through focused learning and support. Consultation and supervision help identify blind spots and better options. Study that centers the client’s culture reduces future harm and shows commitment.
This outside work keeps the burden of education off the client. Returning with new understanding and a concrete plan signals respect. Schedule consultation and set a learning plan before the next meeting.
Realign Care With Cultural Values
Repair is incomplete unless treatment itself changes in culturally grounded ways. A shared model that fits the client’s values reduces repeated misattunements. Goals, language, and practices can be reshaped to honor culture and context.

Give easy paths to pause, switch topics, or see another provider without penalty. These choices return control without demanding extra teaching or emotional work. Create simple repair options and invite the client to pick what works best.
