What Experiences Highlight the Importance of Being a Counselor?

Once, I was assigned a child client who spent 75% of their time in the toilet due to anxiety. As our sessions progressed, she spent less and less time in the toilet, and by the end of our work, she was in the classroom 100% of the time. It's these tangible changes that show you something is shifting!

As a licensed clinical social worker, a memorable experience highlighting my role was helping a teenager struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem. Through our weekly sessions, she gradually opened up about being bullied at school due to her weight and appearance. We worked on building confidence from the inside out, focusing on her strengths, interests, and future goals. Over time, her anxiety lessened, she made new friends, and became involved in after-school activities. At our final session, she thanked me for helping her believe in herself again. Witnessing her transformation affirmed why I chose this career.

Another memorable case was counseling a couple with communication issues and unresolved grief over losing a child. Initially, arguments were frequent and trust was broken. We addressed avoided discussions related to their loss, set healthy boundaries, and worked to improve empathy and active listening. After several months, their relationship and ability to support each other had strengthened. At their last visit, they reported feeling closer than ever before. For me, seeing them leave hand in hand, with hope restored, highlighted the power of compassion and healing.

Most recently, I helped an elderly client address feelings of loneliness and depression following his wife's death. He had isolated himself and lost interest in social interaction or activities he once enjoyed. We focused on coping strategies, re-engaging with his community, and honoring his wife's memory in a healthy way. Over time, he started volunteering, reconnected with old friends, and even began dating again. At our final meeting, he gave me a hug and said I had given him back his life. Witnessing such profound change is why I find this work so meaningful.

As an Academic Community College Counselor, I sometimes wonder how students are doing after they leave the community college. I was surprised to see a former student make an appointment to see me. He shared with me that he had gotten into the Registered Nursing program, completed it, and will be starting on his bachelor's degree in Nursing. He also shared that he'll be working at the local hospital, too. He added that I was a strong supporter in his education in getting into the Associate Degree Nursing program. We continue to be available to students, and it's amazing to hear of their progress and where they end up. It was very uplifting to see the student and hear that I played a part in their educational and career goals.
